Avatar #1

From Phil Contrino at http://www.boxoffice.com/
"Avatar has reached slightly more than $601 million domestically, which means that it has topped    Titanic's $600.8 million unadjusted gross."

Given to the movie's performance that last several weeks this is not a surprise, but noteworthy nonetheless.  Much has been made about taking inflation into account, and the added boost of 3-D showings, but those points are mostly moot.  Regardless of the money gained from 3-D showings the box office take has still been rather hefty, and the percentage drops are have been rather small.  Avatar has demonstrated serious staying power, the last movie to stay number one at the box office for so long was The Sixth Sense and before that Titantic.  The movie is getting repeat business and more people are jumping on the bandwagon to see what all the hype is about.  Avatar regardless of what you think about the film's quality is truly a cinematic event.  The 3-D aspect only adds to that, the film really trully won't be the same on the small screen.  This can only augment its box office take even further as people rush to the see movie before it finally fades away from multiplexes.
